Shear modulus of single wood pulp fibers from torsion tests

چکیده

Abstract The shear modulus of pulp fibers is difficult to measure and only very little literature available on this topic. In work we are introducing a method fiber property utilizing custom built instrument. From the geometry cross section, twisting angle applied torque, derived by de Saint Venant’s theory torsion. deformation moving coil mechanism. support rotating part consists taut bands, making it nearly frictionless, which allows easy control torque twist fiber. A permanent magnet meter was fitted with sample holder for references. Measurements fine metal bands were performed validate irregular shape reconstructed from several microtome cuts an apparent torsion constant computed applying theory. Fibers two types industrial measured: thermomechanical (TMP) Kraft pulp. average determined as (2.13 $${\pm }$$ ± 0.36) GPa TMP (2.51 0.50) fibers, respectively. showed smaller but, due their less collapsed state, higher torsional rigidity than kraft fibers.

Correlating Off-axis Tension Tests to Shear Modulus of Wood-based Panels

The weakness of existing relationships correlating off-axis modulus of elasticity E to shear mod ulus G12 for wood composite panels is demonstrated through presentation of extensive experimental data. A new relationship is proposed that performs better than existing equations found in the literature. This relationship can be manipulated to calculate the shear modulus G12 of orthotropic specim...

Dynamic Methods to Evaluate the Shear Modulus of Wood

There are different dynamic or static test methodologies for evaluating the shear and torsional moduli of wood. A preferred method is nondestructive, accurate, and standard. However, dynamic methods using conventional devices previously suggested for determining the orthotropic shear moduli of wood are neither accurate nor standard. Thus, a reliable method for evaluating the torsional modulus o...

Raman Spectroscopic Characterization of Wood and Pulp Fibers, Chapter 2

This chapter reviews applications of Raman spectroscopy in the field of wood and pulp fibers. Most of the literature examined was published between 1998 and 2006. In addi tion to introduction, this chapter contains sections on wood and components, mechanical pulp, chemical pulp, modified/treated wood, cellulose I crystallinity of wood fibers, and the “self-absorption” phenomenon in near-infrar...

Development of a high-resolution micro-torsion tester for measuring the shear modulus of metallic glass fibers

A high-resolution micro-torsion tester is developed based on electromagnetism, and the shear modulus of metallic glass fiber (Pd40Cu30Ni10P20) is measured using this tester. The torque is measured by a coil-magnet component and the rotation angle is measured by an inductive angular transducer. The calibration results show that the torque capacity of this tester is 1.1 × 10−3 N m with resoluti...

Torsion / Simple Shear of Single Crystal Copper

We analyze simple shear and torsion of single crystal copper by employing experiments, molecular dynamics simulations, and finite element simulations in order to focus on the kinematic responses and the apparent yield strengths at different length scales of the specimens. In order to compare torsion with simple shear, the specimens were designed to be of similar size. To accomplish this, the ra...
